Stupid Chrome Tasks
Current state of things:
Updates were made today to permit
this application to export bookmarks from any version of Chrome, and likely the Chromium build as well. Have at it.
Essentially, this means no more errors mentioning the ‘starred’ table. I for one will be glad to never hear of that again.
The original story:
Having nothing better to do the other week, I installed the new Google Chrome browser. It seemed to be working pretty well, and without getting to much in to it right here; for me the choice in a browser doesn’t get me all that excited, so I went ahead and made Chrome my default web browser for my main system.
I haven’t really had any complaints - I avoid plugins and themes anyway but I did think at some point that I should mirror my newly added bookmarks back to Firefox or IE, only to find that the export functionality is not yet implemented.
So, here, for my own use and yours too if you have the need, is a very simple program to export bookmarks from Chrome to a standard document (the age-old bookmark.html file) usable by Firefox or IE (or I would imagine just about anything else).
While I was there, I also added the tremendously useless button to remove all download history as well - another item that seems to not be available yet in Chrome itself.
No warranties or guarantees on this program doing just what you want it to do, but I needed it, I use it now, and I forced myself to actually test it on several systems (OK… two systems. Vista 64 and XP 32). Feel free to use it yourself, just unzip and run. I’m open to adding more if you have got an interesting idea, but otherwise I would expect that this program will become unnecessary with a forthcoming Chrome update.
Until then….
Your app is erroring out when I try.
Tested on Windows XP MCE.
Please e-mail me and I’ll shoot you the error logs.
The download has been patched to correct this. My guess is that you are missing a SP for .NET, as other have reported a similar issue.
Please let me know if there are any additional problems, and thanks for pointing out the problem.
It works ! many thanks !
This is slick… Thank you.
wow ive been trying for too long to get my bookmarks back, this program was so simple and did the job perfect, thanks a million!
Works fine in my xp 32bits. Many thanks.
Thank you very much
I’m now able to synch my Chrome and Firefox bookmarks from my 2 computers
Great job!
Thank you for your efforts. It worked like a charm.
When I try to use this, I get an error about some file not being found.
Please email me, and I can provide a screenshot, and/or you can explain how I can grab any needed logs to troubleshoot.
Thanks.
I can unzip it and run it just fine and it generates bookmark.htm. But when I go to IE7 and try to import favorites from that file, it seems to run correctly (no errors), but no bookmarks show up.
Any thoughts? The file looks okay to me — it’s a bunch of HTML, mostly and and tags like I would expect. The layout’s a little different than the one IE produces, but whitespace is meaningless in HTML, so it shouldn’t matter…
Oops - “mostly and and tags” should read “mostly <DL> and <DT> and <A> tags”.
thank you so much, works perfect!
thanks so much
Hi, is there any way to import these exported bookmarks back into Google Chrome?
Thanks alot was about to do it the hard way
Tony
Wow. That was so helpful! I decided to switch back to Firefox after trying out Chrome for a couple of weeks. That was going to be really painful without your help.
nice UI and brilliant! thanks!
It gives a “Database Access Connection Failure” error…
Besides, does it work with Chromium too? And what if there are multiple profiles?
Hi, Mark is it?
Thanks so much for this, I want to use Chrome along side firefox but recently Ive been stuck on Chrome as all my new bookmarks have been on it. With this app I now can update between the two easily. Thanks a bunch. By the way I’ve added a post about this on my blog here:
http://blog.timolthof.com/exporting-bookmarks-with-chrome/
Thanks again! -Tim
A big thank you!
Congratulations for your work. I think by this time Google must have knocked on your door…
Not joking, I came across this web of your after looong time searching for this issue. And you are providing a good solution.
Thank you!
Works like a charm. Thank you!
Hello,
I think I should Revert Back to IE coz Chrome is using Much CPU
Power & my computer is noising like a Jet Plane due to plenty of CPU
Usage.
Is there any one know that how Chrome Book Marks can be exported to
IE.
This is exactly what I wanted! Thank you very much for your work.
Cheers,
db
I want to say that
U ARE GREAT, Actually I think u r a Web Master and HTML Master u. I think u r a Programmer.
Thanks so much. Please comment on my following Query: -
I have noticed the following Factor in Chrome & IE, Please suggest
which Web Explorer is best among Chrome & IE? And please rectify at which point I m wrong.
Chrome use more CPU Power than IE. And It opens a new [Chrome.Exe] for
each new Tab. But Chrome is RAM Friendly and use less RAM than IE.
IE uses more RAM and less CPU.
Bookmarks in Chrome cannot be modified whether in IE Book Marks can be
modified & Backup manually. But Chrome lack this feature.
Please suggest me to which Web Explorer I should stick to?
Thank you, guy!
Great program!
Thank you SOOO much for this. I had transfered all my FF bookmarks to Chrome and accidentally deleted them from FF and thought I would have to get them back one by one in a labourious process but I found your tool, excellent!
Not such table : starred.. i got that error, any ideas? im running the latest DEV Chrome release
Carlos: I would not be surprised if the table is no longer used in developer builds. The app works with the public beta download and I have not tried it with Chromium.
thanks a lot. google should hire you instead those dumb ass who build chrome.
Awesome
Thank you so much! Dont understand why chrome doesnt have the option to export bookmarks.
just wanted to say thank you.
this worked great. my only issue is that it is saved on an HTM file and that i now have no idea how to add the new links to IE (6 & 7 versions).
i think it would be smart to add a small bit on how one can add the links quickly and easily into already exist folders in favorites.
Your Program work very good. Thanks a lot
Thanks a lot, you made my life a little simpler, thanks
The program works perfect! I announce your program in my blog. Many thanks!
Thanks a lot. You are the man.
It worked like a charm for me. Thank you very much for a nice and easy-to-use app.
I have a problem.
When I try to export I get the message:
SQLite error
no such table: starred.
What should I do?
Thanks.
You are likely using a Chromium build unless Google updated Chrome without my realizing it. The starred table no longer is used. This app is specifically for the beta release of Chrome.
Yeah youre right, I am using a Chromium build.
Is there a way for me to go back to the beta?
Thanks for replying.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I needed to correct a flaw in the Chrome installation, but didn’t want to lose my extensive list of bookmarks.
Your app worked perfectly!
Thanks a lot! A real life saver! Now i can uninstall Chrome.
Hah! I uninstalled it the other day as well. No real complaint about it, but if I need to use IE for some sites (or the IE tab plugin in Firefox), Firefox for others (plugins that I need), and using Chrome wasnt required for any sites, then it just complicated things.
Database Connection Failure. It won’t work for me. What do I do?
There is usually additional information with the error message. If you could supply that, i could try to help.
How can I tell if I am using a build of Chromium, and if I am, how can I go back to using Chrome?
Thanks.
I am now getting the SQ Lite error too:
SQLite error
no such table: starred.
I didn’t have that happen before. My current version of Chrome is 0.3.154.9.
Have they removed the star table in this version?
That they did. Sneaky. Just took me a few days to find the time to add in support for the new storage.
My current version of Chrome is 0.3.154.9. and I get error:
SQLite error
no such table: starred.
???? Help
It give the error
SQLite error
no such Table: Starred.
Other users have identical problem, please tell us solution?
The solution was for me to update the application, Google quietly updated Chrome, breaking this application. This has been resolved, check the latest release.
Great idea. Just what I was seeking, but it does not work on either the latest Firefox or the latest IE. The former only has proprietary import capability, which would be alright if ChromeDump worked with IE (Firefox imports from IE), but ChromeDump doesn’t work to IE (”cannot import parts of the file”). Onward and upward, Kimosabe. Thanks.
Would like to see the exported file (minus any personal bookmarks), because I have imported the resulting file in to several versions of Firefox (both Windows and Linux) and IE 7 and 8.
Awww!
It didn’t work on XP Home. It gives an error, creates the file but there’s nothing in it.
Feel free to send a screenshot of the error, or just the text from it. No reason why it wouldnt work just because its XP Home.
Bravo! Its unusual to find a little “quickie” utility that is so nifty and refined. From the simplicity of downloading and installing it to the intuitiveness of use, I really think this is a perfect gem.
RC
Hi, I downloaded this and tried it on my win xp sp 2 machine and it’s still erroring out on the starred table? I then tried it on my vista x64 machine and it errored with the same error message. I thought this had been fixed? Any ideas?
I’m still getting the error in regards to a *starred* table, on xp and vista machine. Any ideas?
The download link doesn’t appear to have been updated - I’m still getting the ’starred’ error, and then if I click ‘continue’ it just produces an empty html file.
Seems the tool can not support Chinese characters. what is the code used ? UTF8 or unicode ?
Risker
this tool also can’t support Russian characters..
could you solve this problem?
I have an error when I click
the text : No init correctly (0xc0000135)
I just wanted to say thank you for the program.
It works under vista x64, just make sure you have the compatability mode turned on for XP SP2 - might need admin rights.
I noticed that there were quite a few threads in the offical Google Chrome group with people asking about how to set Google Chrome as the default web browser on Windows Vista machines. There have been a mixture of responses here and there, but I never found one to work for me. It has been a few weeks searching for a solution. Google Chrome really appeals to me but I have never been able to set it as my default browser. I have tried on three different computers, two of which run Windows Vista. The third computer running Windows XP, I had no issues with.
1.Right Click on the Google Chrome Desktop Shortcut icon and view Properties.
2.Click the “Compatibility” Tab and check, “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and in the drop down menu select, “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)”.
3. In the Privlege Level Section, check, “Run this program as an administrator” and then Click apply and then ok.
4. Open Google Chrome using the Desktop Shortcut Icon. A “User Account Control” window will pop up, simply allow access.
5. You will experience a “Windows - Application Error” with the following or similiar message: “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application.” Simply click the OK button.
6. Google Chrome will load but the screen will display, “Aw, Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. To continue, press Reload or go to another page.” From this point, simply click the TOOLS icon.
7. After you click the TOOLS option, then proceed to click the “Make Google Chrome my default browser” button. After doing so, The text above should appear green with the following message, “The default browser is currently Google Chrome.”
8. Close The Window and then Close Google Chrome.
9. Right Click on the Google Chrome Desktop Shortcut icon and view Properties.
10. Click the Compatibility Tab and UNCHECK the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” option.
11. In the “Privlege Level” section, UNCHECK the “Run this program as an administrator” option.
12. Click “Apply” and then click, “OK”.
13. Double The Google Chrome Desktop Shortcut icon and enjoy using Google Chrome.
Hope this works for you… it worked for me, but I am by far from being an expert in any form of programming or Google Chrome Tweaking. I am just very happy to finally have it set as my default browser. Sometimes little things like this bug me. Finally I can truly give Google Chrome a run for its money and see what it is all about.
ENJOY………….
Could you make this export passwords as well?
ive bean looking for great addons ever since i downloaded chrome it enhances my surfing experence 10x please make more if you can
When the download history is cleared all canceled downloads remain.
Otherwise, thanks for the handy tool.
